Mesothelioma can be categorized into 4 main types depending on the body part affected by it. They are:

Pleural mesothelioma:

It is the mesothelioma type affecting the lining surrounding our lungs. Statistics offered by the American Cancer Society suggests that it is the most common mesothelioma variant. Patients with pleural mesothelioma can suffer from a condition called pleural effusion, which causes accumulation of fluid in the region around the patient’s lungs. The signs of pleural effusion include persistent coughs and breathing difficulties. Mesothelioma patients are also known to experience symptoms like weight loss, pain in the around the chest, fatigue and weakness.

Peritoneal mesothelioma:

The mesotheliomas affecting our peritoneum, the connective tissue layer forming the lining of the abdomen is referred to as peritoneal mesothelioma. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is one of the most aggressive cancer forms. This type of mesothelioma can occur due to exposure to asbestos as well as several other factors. Some common signs of peritoneal mesothelioma are: unexplained weight loss, abdominal swelling, pain in the abdomen and abdominal lumps.

Pericardial mesothelioma:

This is the name used for describing the mesothelioma type affecting our pericardium. The pericardium is the connective tissue layer covering our heart. Cancer affecting the pericardium often leads to inflammation in the surrounding region of the heart, as a result of which the heart might find it difficult to beat normally. This makes conditions like abnormal heart rate and heart failure common among patients suffering from pericardial mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma affecting tunica vaginalis:

Tunica vaginalis is basically the connective tissue layer of the scrotum. Mesothelioma affecting this body part is termed as mesothelioma of tunica vaginalis. This cancer type is mostly detected as lumps appearing near or on any one testicle.

Mesothelioma is generally treated by surgically removing the cancerous cells and tumors and applying chemotherapy and radiation therapy. This article will inform about the risk factors of mesothelioma.

Primary asbestos exposures: According to most medical experts, this one is the strongest risk factor of mesothelioma. Primary asbestos exposures are experienced by individuals working in mines and people who perform the work of laying insulations and roofing.

Secondary asbestos exposures: Secondary asbestos exposures can occur on coming in close contact with individuals having primary asbestos exposures. Secondary asbestos exposures can also increase one’s risk of suffering from mesothelioma. Scientifically conducted surveys have revealed that incidence of mesothelioma among family members and close friends of miners (or people working in other asbestos related industry) is more compared to people who has no links with any such profession. Secondhand exposure might occur from the clothing or other items containing the cancerous fibers.

Thorium Dioxide: Elderly people often get treated with thorium dioxide; this agent is known for increasing one’s risk of having mesothelioma. During the 1950s, this agent was used widely for diagnosing certain medical conditions; however, from the time when the harmful effect of thorium dioxide was proved through medical studies doctors do not use this agent for diagnosis anymore.

Simian Virus40: Individuals who got vaccinated for polio prevention from 1955 to 1963 might have received vaccines contaminated with a virus called simian virus40 or SV40. This virus is strong mesothelioma risk factor.

Family history: If you have family history of this cancer type, you have higher chances of suffering from the disease compared to one who does not have any case of mesothelioma in his or her family. However, studies are still going on for finding out the gene responsible for familial connection of mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is an atypical cancer type which crops up in the mesothelial lining (the protecting lining which cases several inner body organs) of heart, abdominal & lung areas generally caused after being exposed to asbestos. Mesothelioma stated more accurately as malignant mesothelioma in some instances has also been cited to occur in the testicular lining. The commonest location for mesothelioma is the pleura (the exterior lining of lungs & inner trunk wall) though it could surface in the peritoneum (stomach cavity lining), pericardial area (a pouch surrounding the heart) and the heart.

Majority of the individuals that developed mesothelioma have been in vocations wherein inhalation of glass particle matter & asbestos occurred or they have exposure to asbestos fibres or powder. It has even been indicated that those who wash the clothing of kin members who are working with glass or asbestos could place that individual at risk of getting mesothelioma. Disparate to lung cancer, there isn’t any link amid this type of cancer & smoking, though people who smoke augment their risk for developing other asbestos provoked cancers. People who had asbestos exposure mostly deploy an attorney for collecting damage incurred from asbestos-linked condition, inclusive of mesothelioma. Reimbursement through asbestos funding or court cases is a crucial matter in mesothelioma.

What is Mesolioma Signs & Symptoms?

Mesothelioma signs & symptoms might not surface till 2-5 decades or more after being exposed to asbestos. The symptoms mentioned herewith might be arising from mesothelioma or by lesser grave condition.

Mesothelioma affecting the pleura could be causing:

Pains in the trunk wall

Pleural effusion (fluid encasing the lungs)

Breathlessness

Gasping, croakiness or coughing

Feeling fatigued or anaemic

In acute situations, the individual might develop several tumor accumulations (mass). The person might also be developing pneumothorax or collapsed lungs. The condition might start metastasizing or spreading to other body areas.

Tumors which afflict the stomach cavity mostly are not causal to symptoms till they are in a later staging. Signs & symptoms entail:

Stomach pains

An irregular accruement of fluids in the stomach or ascites

Abdominal mass

Issues related to bowel functioning

Weight reduction

In acute scenarios of the condition, the below mentioned signs & symptoms might be noticed:

Thrombophlebitis (blood clot formations in the veins)

Jaundice (yellow skin & eye)

Pleural effusion

Acute ascites

Squat blood glucose level

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (a condition causal to acute blood loss in several organs of the body)

Mesothelioma doesn’t generally metastasize to bones, adrenal glands or brain. Pleural tumor is generally observed to arise solely on one of the sides of the lungs.

What is Mesothelioma cause?

The main mesothelioma risk factor is when one works with asbestos. In the U.S., asbestos is the key reason for malignant mesothelioma & deemed indubitably linked to the condition developing. Without a doubt, the link amid this condition & asbestos is that strong that several deem the condition a signal tumor. A past of being exposed to asbestos is existent in majority of the cases, though mesothelioma has been cited in several people sans any identifiable asbestos exposure. Several trials indicate that SV40 (simian virus 40) might function as a co-factor in the condition developing. Rarely, it has been linked to Thorotrast, inhaling fibrous silicate types or irradiation.

Study researchers & physicians are constantly struggling to enhance mesothelioma life expectancy since many a decade. Even as there isn’t any ultimate treatment for mesothelioma, a patient might decide on undergoing therapy which might assist in prolonging his/her life span & enhance general quality of existence.

Mesothelioma Life Expectancy – What Affects It?

Mesothelioma is an atypical cancer principally arising due to being exposed to asbestos. Mesothelioma life expectancy among patients might be impacted by several decisive factors that include:

Latency Phase

Disparate to other types of cancer wherein the signs & symptoms arise rapidly, mesothelioma symptoms don’t manifest themselves till several decades subsequent to being exposed to asbestos. Such protracted span of latency mostly leads to the condition being diagnosed in its later stages when cancerous metastasis has taken root which makes it trickier in treating. In such situations, characteristically patients would be receiving palliative therapies instead of remedial, that are intended on making patients lesser uncomfortable & enhancing their general quality of existence.

Age when Diagnosed

Majority of the reports suggest that avg. age of mesothelioma sufferer is sixty years old. Factually, over seventy-five percent of people identified with mesothelioma in the U.S. are those in their mid-fifties or more. But, several scientists deem that the avg. age is plummeting because of the incursion of cases due to secondary exposures. In case an elderly individual gets mesothelioma, there can be compromise in therapy because of existence of several health-linked issues like cardiovascular ailment, added lung conditions & hypertension. Increasing age & existence of other ailments could considerably impact life expectancy of patients.

Mesothelioma Forms

Mesothelioma comprising of trio main forms could afflict individuals – the commonest type being pleural mesothelioma that afflicts cells that line the lungs. Other types entail peritoneal mesothelioma (afflicting stomach lining) and pericardial mesothelioma (afflicting heart lining). Due to the pervasiveness of pleural mesothelioma, greater know-how and studies are obtainable for utilizing when therapy plans are detailed.

Smoking

A person identified with mesothelioma who smokes vastly reduces his/ her life span and it is most important for such people to cease the habit at the earliest since it can significantly improve life expectancy.

Enhancing Mesothelioma Life Expectancy

People who are focused towards studying mesothelioma are examining novel means of improving life spans of those afflicted by the disease. This is chiefly attained via scientific studies that are testing novel medications & therapies. Several substitutes to conventional therapies have shown potential in scientific studies and those partaking in these studies are benefiting from it. Tests for mesothelioma detection in its nascent stages are additionally been created that might lead to more effectual therapy of the condition.

Life span of mesothelioma sufferers could additionally be affected by therapy. Patients might opt for undergoing therapy for combating mesothelioma, removal or obliteration of cancerous presence. A physician would be offering therapy suggestions on the basis of several factors like chemotherapy, surgery & radiotherapy being the commonest of them.

A common, daunting query posed by individuals after mesothelioma diagnosis is ‘How much time are they left with?’ which is a tricky one for specialists to definitively respond. Undeniably, all cases differ & cancer could be a volatile condition – at times a case appearing austere turns out to hold promise while in a patient whose condition does not appear that dire, advances swiftly resulting in early mortality.

Generally, mesothelioma prognosis has been quite dismal for patients in the last ten or more years. The exceptionally aggressive malignant mesothelioma has a lengthy dormant phase due to which detection generally occurs when it has progressed to later staging. Thus, mesothelioma prognosis & survival rate among these patient types is mostly adverse – typically 1-2 years. But this does not essentially translate to there not being any exception to this & such a grim outlook wouldn’t be changing in the near future, particularly with development of more & improved therapies.

Mesothelioma Prognosis Determination

Presently, several diverse matters ascertain outlook of mesothelioma affected patients like:

Form
Mesothelioma classification is into 3 forms based on the tissue involvement. Epithelial mesothelioma constitutes half of the cases though with superior survival rates as compared to sarcomatoid mesothelioma noted in fifteen percent of patient diagnosis & thirty-five percent of mixed form of mesothelioma.

Site
Mesothelioma classification is additionally based on the site of its occurrence. For instance, the commonest pleural mesothelioma (noted in eighty percent cases) that assaults the lung lining has the finest survival rate. The next rather pervasive peritoneal mesothelioma noted in ten to fifteen percent of cases is usually trickier in treating. Lesser prevalent forms are trickier in treating, inclusive of pericardial mesothelioma & testicular mesothelioma.

Staging
Mesothelioma prognosis is based on how earlier on the condition diagnosis has been done & how sooner therapy could commence. Due to mesothelioma’s protracted dormant phase, it mostly remains undiagnosed till it has entered stage III or IV, when symptoms ultimately surface. Regrettably, several of such symptoms bear resemblance to a wide-ranging array of respiratory conditions inclusive of several lesser grave ones, such as pneumonia or flu thus mostly resulting in wrong diagnosis.

Extent of Spread

When mesothelioma is at long last diagnosed, the oncologist would mostly uncover that the disease has metastasized from originating site and reached other body areas – mostly those adjoining along with the lymph nodes. The degree to which mesothelioma has metastasized would establish which therapy form is advised and the outlook.

Overall Health of Patients

Patients who are from the young age band & in otherwise good health would be surviving more as compared to ones in middle age or senior citizens. Elderly patients are mostly tackling conditions such as cardiovascular ailment, hypertension or are diabetic can make surgical intervention and conventional cancer therapy riskier & acutely restricting therapy choices.

Supplementary Factors Pertinent to Mesothelioma Prognosis

Longevity
Longevity in people who receive a mesothelioma diagnosis is based on several decisive factors like overall health, cancer staging when identified & which therapy choices the patients are eligible for. People identified with preliminary staging cancer & in otherwise ideal health would be having better survival rate as compared to people identified with later staging mesothelioma.

Survival Rates
Survival rate in case of cancer is mostly referred to as comparative 5-year survival rate which is indicative of patient numbers that manage to live 5 years past their disease diagnosis. Presently, the 5-yr survival rate in case of mesothelioma patients is merely ten per cent. Although it appears as a rather bleak figure, it is better than what it was around a decade or more back.

The present 1-yr survival rate in such patients is around forty per cent which too has shown a significant increase in the past decade. Regrettably, mesothelioma prognosis in majority of the patients continues to be pitiable by and large. Several patients are yet dying a yr. following mesothelioma identification and avg. survival rate being ten to eleven months, as per information furnished by the ACA.

Remission
Being among the highly belligerent cancer forms which swiftly spreads from its initial location to the areas like lung, stomach cavity & lymph nodes hence not many mesothelioma sufferers enter remission. But with proper & timely treatment several patients have been observed to have prolonged survival rate that have surpassed past hopes. Therapy choices entail chemo, radiotherapy & surgical resection.

Cure
Even though till date mesothelioma cannot be cured, there have been notable accomplishments in the last decade in this field of studies. Developments of novel tests have assisted medical experts in detecting cancer earlier & there’s wide-ranging array of new-fangled therapy choices obtainable for improving longevity in mesothelioma sufferers. Patients identified with earlier staging of the condition when offered therapy with chemo, radiotherapy & surgical intervention live for several years. Several patients even note favourable results via the use alternative treatments in adjunct with conventionally used cancer therapies.

Survivors
Presently since mesothelioma cannot be cured, numerous patients have been successful in disease management with conventional therapies such as chemotherapy & operative techniques, however even via the usage of nutrients in supplemental form, palliative treatments & stress allaying methods. Several patients identified with the disease have managed to survive several years past what was originally dire outlook.

Mesothelioma Prognosis Improvement

In the past ten years, the quandary of mesothelioma patients has grabbed greater notice & study funding have been directed towards researches for this condition & unearthing of new-fangled medications & therapies to proffer sanguinity of an improved prognosis for mesothelioma patients.

Researchers have been endeavouring to develop novel tests for diagnosing mesothelioma in a sooner staging. For instance, Mesomark assay blood testing helps in measurement of the SMPR (Soluble Mesothelin-Related Peptides) rate in bloodstream. Mesothelioma cells release such a biological marker in the blood & SMRP could be high for several years prior to a person becoming symptomatic & a definite identification of the condition is done. Such a means for earlier identification holds potential to be a major life-saviour.

Therapies deploying novel chemo medications such as Alimta & techniques capable of more focused radiation delivery to tumors too have added to longevity of mesothelioma sufferers. Moreover, investigational therapies like gene therapy, immunotherapy, PDT (photodynamic therapy) have been observed to successfully treat this tricky condition.

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is a rarely occurring cancer form wherein merely one to five hundred cases are identified annually in the United States, constituting for below thirty percent of all mesothelioma cases.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer afflicting the cells that line the abdomen known as the peritoneum (membrane supporting & covering organs in the stomach) hence the condition is at times is also dubbed as abdominal mesothelioma.

Peritoneum comprises of duo sections – parietal (that cases the stomach lining) & visceral (casing the inner organs & constituting majority of the exterior layer of the gastrointestinal tract). Cells present in such linings emit a fluid that permits inter-organ frictionless movements. For example, intestinal movement for permitting victual flow via the body. Mesothelium cells produce fluid; however the cancer could trigger their overproduction, leading to an accruement of excessive fluids in the stomach cavity.

Since pleural mesothelioma is more pervasive & mostly spreading to the interior of the peritoneum, it is crucial to ascertain whether it is the primary cancer (original tissue/organ where cancer originated).

Causes

Though there is no exhaustive elucidation, it is broadly deemed that asbestos is causal to peritoneal mesothelioma in the following manner:

Firstly, strands of asbestos on ingestion gain entry into the gastrointestinal tract & then the interior of the peritoneum.

Secondly, inhalation & transportation of asbestos strands via the lymphatic node system and reaching the peritoneum interiors.

Symptoms

Malignant peritoneal mesothelium signs & symptoms might not surface till two to three decades after being firstly exposed to asbestos. Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms might comprise of, though not restricted to:

Cancer-caused irregular fluid accruement in the abdominal region known as malignant ascites. Cancerous identification is solely made in around ten percent of these cases & from this ten percent, peritoneal mesothelioma constitutes just a miniscule proportion. Ascites could be rather discomforting and causes abdominal swell-up, weight increase, unsettled stomach, feeling nauseous & swell-up of ankle & feet areas.

Fluid being retained generally is causal to abdominal swell-up; solid tumors accruements might be accountable for abdominal pains.

In spite of fluid accruement that mostly expands waistlines, appetites of such patients might dip leading to weight reduction.

Lowered RBC count making the person anemic and exerts strain on the cardiovascular system & other organs to toil more for getting necessary oxygen.

Among cancer sufferers infection is the highly prevalent reason for fever, however cancerous cells could even manufacture fever-causative agents. Bowel blockage too could be causal to fever.

Blockages/ obstructions in the large/small intestines & mostly occurs belatedly, a peritoneal mesothelioma sign.

Diagnosis

A physical examination is done and the patient’s personal & medical history evaluated. Any past of being exposed to asbestos must be bought to the doctor’s notice as it could be vital inkling during diagnosis.

Subsequently imaging methods like X-ray, MRI or CT scanning might be done on the abdominal region. Though mesothelioma could not be definitely identified by optical substantiation, tumors might be apparent or excessive serous liquid might be noticed. In peritoneal mesothelioma, the trio key forms in which tumors develop are:

Wet – linked to ascites & inflammation, absence of firm mass formations though smallish lumps & plaque developments are apparent in such form of peritoneal mesothelioma.

Dry Painful – Commonly found peritoneal mesothelium form wherein a single big or many smallish though analogously situated masses in the peritoneal cavity are observed.

Mixed – A combo of these above duo peritoneal mesothelioma forms.

When fluid accumulation in the abdominal region has occurred then paracentesis procedure is conducted wherein needle insertion inside the peritoneum interior is done for draining the surplus fluid from the abdominal cavity.

FNA (fine needle aspiration) biopsy is initially conducted since it less-invasive and risk-free analytic method for infinitesimal examination of dubious cells.

When additional testing is necessary for making a definite identification then peritoneoscopy method is done wherein after anesthetizing (local) the patient a tiny slit is made that permits the surgeon in peering into the abdominal area with the assistance of specialized device known as peritoneoscope for collection of a bigger tissue sample to be biopsied.

Peritoneal mesothelioma diagnosis can be tricky and mostly done when it has advanced.

Treatment

It can be tricky to treat peritoneal mesothelioma as the disease characteristically has reached advanced staging, physicians classically advice therapy for combating cancer & assisting in pain respite. Prevalent therapies deployed for mesothelioma patients are surgery, radiotherapy & chemotherapy. Chemo drugs & radiotherapy help in targeting & killing cancer cells which swiftly multiple.

Whilst no identified cure is existent for this condition, sufferers could enrol for undergoing a combo of therapies or partake in scientific studies for pain alleviation & improving quality of existence.

Mesothelioma patients classically become symptomatic amid two to five decades subsequent to initially being exposed to asbestos. Cancer could be taking ten or more years in developing & symptoms not arising till after the cancer has taken root. Several patients are oblivious to the acuteness of their condition due to mesothelioma symptoms frequently bearing semblance to other lesser grave ailments.

Those with a past of being exposed to asbestos (the key reason for mesothelioma arising) must be seeking prompt medical guidance. Your physician should be notified about this piece of information which could provide the vital inkling in the likelihood of asbestos-linked condition being present. Being diagnosed earlier could considerably affect lifespan of mesothelioma patients.

Early Mesothelioma Symptoms

Atypically mesothelioma symptoms surface in preliminary staging which is the main reason for it often being detected in a later staging of growth. Hence, in the best interests of the person who has experienced an asbestos exposure in the past although not symptomatic must be undergoing chest X-ray or mecholyl challenge or PFT for monitoring any indications of asbestos inhalations.

Symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is a highly pervasive form of the condition (occurs in seventy-five percent of the cases) developing in the pleura (the delicate serous membrane around the interior trunk walls & lungs). Identified symptoms might comprise of:

Persisting dry or rasping coughs (classically little or non phlegmatic).

Bloody coughs or hemoptysis.

Problems trying to swallow or dysphagia.

Exhaustion.

Inexplicable weight reduction of ten or more per cent.

Night-time perspiration or feverishness.

Unrelenting pains felt in the trunk or ribs or pains felt when inhaling/exhaling.

Breathlessness or dyspnea occurring despite body being rested.

Lump formations appearing underneath skin of the trunk.

Such signs develop when the pleural membrane thickens due to swift manufacture of cancer cells that could be leading to fluid accruement amid membrane sheaths. This only leads to additional strain on the lungs and reduces its functioning.

Symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Such a condition accounting for twenty to thirty percent of the cases is detected in the peritoneal membrane of the abdomen. Identified symptoms might comprise of:

Night-time perspiration or fevers.

Incomprehensible weight reduction.

Abdominal pains or swell up.

Becoming anaemic.

Feeling fatigued.

Looseness of bowels or feeling constipated (generally any variations in bowel patterns or constancy).

Feeling nauseous or puking.

Lumpy appearances underneath skin of the abdominal area.

Symptoms arising lead to fluid accumulation amid membranous sheets pressurizing stomach area & organs leading to the individual showing signs of cancer.

Symptoms of Pericardial Mesothelioma

This condition constitutes for below five percent of entire mesothelioma cases and arises due to the pericardial membrane solidifying & fluid accruement. Identified symptoms comprise of:

Cardiac palpitations or erratic cardiac beats.

Pains felt in the chest.

Respiratory problems despite not exerting the body – dyspnea.

Fevers or night-time sweating.

Overall weariness.

This type rarely occurs and the identified symptoms aren’t properly developed as is the case with other prevalent mesothelioma forms. It is especially trickier in diagnosing this type of mesothelioma & correlating to pitiable outlook among the affected patients.

Symptoms of Testicular Mesothelioma

It is a vastly atypical cancer type with below a hundred cases of this mesothelioma form in record since the past six decades. Hence, not much knowledge regarding symptoms of this type is present. The sole identified symptom is lumps appearing in the testicular area that might or might not cause pain.

Despite the fact that there is presently no cure obtainable for malignant mesothelioma, there are varied kinds of treatments available that could comprise of:

Surgery

Surgery is the prevalent course of treatment for malignant mesothelioma wherein sections of the chest or abdominal lining along with some part of the adjacent tissue and at times sections of the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the lungs that assist in respiration are also removed by the surgeon. A lung could additionally be removed in case the cancer has metastasized to that extent – pneumonectomy. The below mentioned are the most widely utilized surgical procedures for treating mesothelioma:

Pleurodesis
Pleurodesis is the treatment offered via a thoracoscope or existent chest tube that is employing for effectually producing inflammation for eliminating the pleural space that aids in hindering the build-up of pleural effusion. This treatment is usually administered when symptoms start surfacing due to pleural effusion. Talc is most often and effectually employed during this procedure, hence it is mostly called as ‘talcing’ or the patient concerned has been ‘talced’.

Pleurectomy
The procedure conducted for an array of disorders comprising of pleural effusion, malignant pleural mesothelioma and trauma wherein there is removal of sections of the chest (pleura) or abdominal lining (peritoneum) and some part of the adjacent tissue.

Pleurectomy or decortication
Surgery for removal of sections of the chest or abdominal lining and most of the tumor mass that could be conducted for allaying pain arising due to the tumor mass or for averting a relapse of pleural effusion. In case of peritoneal mesothelioma, surgery is usually done for assuaging symptoms, like persistent ascites or bowel obstruction. In case of pleural mesothelioma, it is improbable to totally remove the tumor by surgical means.

Pneumonectomy
The operative procedure done for removing a lung.

Extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP)
The surgical excision of the pleura, diaphragm, pericardium and the complete lung affected by the tumor.

Radiation Therapy

High-power x-ray beams, gamma rays, neutrons, and other radiation sources are employed for annihilating the cancer cells and shrinking the tumors. Radiation is administered with a machine that is placed outside the body, known as external radiation therapy or external-beam therapy. Radiation could additionally be offered by materials emitting radiation known as radioisotopes that are placed in or close to the tumor mass. This kind of radiation therapy is known as internal radiation therapy, implant or interstitial radiation or brachytherapy. During systemic radiation therapy, also known as radiotherapy, irradiation and x-ray therapy, employs the use of radioactive material like radio-tagged monoclonal antibody which flows all through the body.

Chemotherapy

During chemotherapy or also known as systemic treatment, drugs administered in either in pill form or given intravenously, make an entry into the bloodstream, circulating throughout the body and obliterating the cancer cells during its passage. In intrapleural chemotherapy, the chemotherapy could be administered directly to the chest region for treating mesothelioma.

Intraoperative photodynamic therapy

A novel form of treatment that employs specialised drugs and light source for obliterating cancer cells during the operative procedure. An intravenous drug intended to make the cancer cells highly receptive to light is given many days prior to the surgery. During the course of the surgery, the special light is directed straight on the pleura over the tumor mass for removing major sections of it. This form of treatment is being researched for use in preliminary mesothelioma staging in the chest region.

Immunotherapy

This approach employs the body’s own immune system for combating the cancer present inside the body.

Gene therapy

This treatment is intended for treating mesothelioma by correction of the genes that elicit proliferation of the tumor, thus potentially curbing their size and multiplication.

Current studies suggest that merely the use of one of the above mentioned malignant mesothelioma treatments has not succeeded in enhancing the survival rates among patients; rather the multimodality approach involving the combined usage of several treatment modes has been known to prove effective in increasing the survival rates.

As symptoms of Mesothelioma are not distinctive to it and the disease’s comparative rarity, mesothelioma misdiagnosis are not unusual. At times it is tricky to decipher the disparity between malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. The below stated tests and procedures could be conducted:

Physical Examination

During the course of the physical examination, the body is checked for overall health condition inclusive of looking for signs of any ailment like lumps or any dubious appearance. The patient’s history is probed to identify health habits, any previous asbestos exposure, past infirmity and treatments undergone.

Chest X-ray

An x-ray is an energy shaft that could pass via the body and onto film, capturing images of inner organs and bones of the body. The chest x-ray is performed for obtaining x-rays of the organs and bones within the chest region.

Complete Blood Count or CBC

A procedure involving the withdrawal of a blood sample to check for the below stated:

The red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC) and platelets count.

The haemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying protein) content in the red blood cells.

The part of the blood sample that constitute the red blood cells.

Sedimentation Rate

During the procedure the blood sample drawn is evaluated for the settling rate of the red blood cells to the base of the test tube.

Biopsy

The extraction of cells or tissues is done from the pleura or peritoneum to be sent for microscopic analysis for spotting malignant growth. Procedures employed for collection of tissue or cell samples involve the following:

Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy of the lung

With the guidance offered by the imaging procedure, through a small incision done on the skin, a fine needle is passed for drawing out tissue or fluid samples from dubious or abnormal tissues or fluid accumulation in the lung.

Thoracoscopy

Through a small slit made in the inter-rib area, a thoracoscope – a fine, tubular illuminated device fixed with a viewing lens is inserted within the chest.

Peritoneoscopy

A tiny opening made on the abdominal wall is made thorough which a slender, tube-alike, light and lens fitted device is passed into the abdomen.

Laparotomy

Through a small cut made in the abdominal wall, the interiors of the abdomen are examined for any presence of disease.

Thoracotomy

An inter-rib slit is done for observing the chest interiors for presence of ailment.

Bronchoscopy

In this procedure the interiors of the trachea and the large air passages in the lung are examined for irregular growths. With the assistance of a bronchoscope (a slender, tubular, illuminated and lens-attached device) passed nasally or orally into the trachea and lungs for viewing and removal of tissue samples to be analysed microscopically for cancer signs.

Cytologic examination

In case of mesothelioma, the fluid build-up in the region around the lungs or abdominal region is drawn to be forwarded to the pathologist for microscopic analysis for checking the cells present in the fluid.
