Thyroid gland is present on our neck’s base and is responsible for regulating important functions like our heart rate, pulse rate and metabolism. In this article we’ll be discussing about thyroid cancer and how ablation treatment can help patients with thyroid cancer. Most cases of thyroid cancer are treatable. Ablation treatment is a therapeutic procedure used for treating cancer; the process involves direct application of thermal or chemical therapies on the cancerous tumors with the aim of destroying them. The ablation treatment used for treating thyroid cancer involves ablation using radioactive iodine.

Unlike cells of other organs and glands of human body, the cells of thyroid gland can absorb iodine. Iodine is an element obtained from food items like malt bread, meat, kelp, strawberries, low fat yogurt etc and ocean water. The thyroid gland requires iodine for producing normal levels of thyroid hormones. The ability of thyroid cells to absorb iodine does not diminish after being attacked by cancer. This makes ablation treatment using radioactive iodine is the best way of treating thyroid cancer. The applied radioactive iodine gets absorbed by the cancerous cells of thyroid gland, and results in destruction of the cancerous cells through spreading of radioactivity.

Thyroid cancer cases that involve differentiated cells (the cells resembling the features of the normal cells, but are comparatively slow growing) are generally treated with ablation treatment using radioactive iodine. Examples of thyroid cancer types treated with this therapeutic procedure are follicular and papillary thyroid cancer. The other thyroid cancer types like medullary and anaplastic thyroid cancer are not treated with radioactive iodine; this is because the cells affected in these cancer types cannot absorb iodine.

Ablation treatment using radioactive iodine is primarily used for destroying the cancer cells in the thyroid gland that were missed during the surgery. The procedure is also applied for killing cancer cells spreading to the patient’s lymph nodes and other distant organs. Radioiodine ablation is also recommended to patients suffering from recurrence of thyroid cancer.

There is rising fear globally regarding radiation poisoning with a latest blast occurring in Unit Number Three reactor in Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. An analogous blow up occurred in the Unit Number One reactor in the analogous facility on Sat., & even as Japanese officials & WHO have since depicted the public-health risks as rather low, worries regarding the likelihood of grave health issues thrive.

Subsequent to the nuclear episode, radioactive iodine (radioiodine) might be set free into the air which has the capability of persisting in the surroundings for one or more months.

Most critically, radioiodine (via ingestion or inhalation) remains in the body & would be concentrating in the thyroid. Excessive iodine in blood (stable iodine/ radioiodine) is swiftly purged out of the body, however solely when saturation of any of the iodine forms occur in the thyroid. Even rather miniscule levels of radioiodine since it’s retained in the smallish gap of the thyroid, ultimately would be giving off that big amount of radiation dosage to thyroid cells there that irregularities could arise in most likelihood – like lost thyroid functioning, node formations in the thyroid or thyroid cancer. The younger kids are the ones most probably to witness the nastiest impact in future.

Several of the Chernobyl thyroid cancer cases surfacing in the ex Soviet Union among youngsters were merely kids below 5 when the mishap occurred. Specialists presently are contending that nearly forty percent of the nodules have cancer with five to ten percent of cancers lethal. Annually, scientists are unearthing more from Chernobyl as its bequest keeps revealing itself. In the WHO statement, the Chernobyl calamity would be causal to fifty thousand novel thyroid cancer cases in youngsters residing in regions mostly afflicted by the nuclear mishap.

Hence, for this reason, potassium iodide tablets have been doled out for protecting those who had exposure to the recent Fukushima Nuclear Leak. The CDC points that potassium iodide tablets could prevent the thyroid gland from swiftly taking up radioactive iodine on inhalation.

However, some experts point that ninety-nine per cent of an individual’s radiation exposure are coming from milk & several dairy items. The radioiodine indirectly charts its course inside the human body. On falling to the grounds, cows consume it & produce milk having radioiodine which gains entry into humans when they consume this milk. Hence, many specialists feel that humans are getting hardly any radioiodine via inhalation and the best means of preventing it is simply stopping individuals from consuming the milk. The pandemic of thyroid cancer in Chernobyl might well have been averted only if the government had swiftly put a halt to milk intake by individuals. Even crop forms could develop radioactive contamination and people could well be eating some fruit or vegetable from plants or trees situated near the Nuclear Plant.

The American Thyroid Assn. points out that once excess radioiodine is absorbed by the thyroid cells – via air or polluted foods – it could augment thyroid cancer risk.

Infants & younger kids have the peak risk due to the radiation-sensitivity of their thyroid glands. Individuals in their forties are at a lesser risk.

In Chernobyl, the huge blast occurring during 1986 lead to an endemic of thyroid cancer & sharp surge in the numbers of leukaemia sufferers. In contrast, the incomplete core meltdown in Three Mile Island during the later part of the seventies that emitted around a million fold lesser radiation didn’t seem to affect cancer occurrences even ten or more years after.

Japan’s radiation leak seems to be veering more to the Three Mile Island episode as compared to Chernobyl.

Hence, it is strongly believed that such lethal cancer agent, particularly for the kids could be straightforwardly, cost-effectively and potentially blocked by the oral intake of potassium iodide even in rather smallish amounts thirty minutes to twenty-four hours prior to ingestion or inhalation of radioactive iodines which can avert ninety-nine percent of harm to the thyroid gland which otherwise would be the outcome.

The thyroid glands are very important for the entire body growth cycle. If the glands suffer with cancerous cells or tumor, it will not only affect the throat, it can also spread inside each and every nerves of the body and blood vessels. A thyroid cancer can also harm the lungs and bones. The National cancer Institute in the US has suggested that every one should have a profound knowledge about thyroid cancer. The person who suffers with the sickness may have pain in the neck, the neck can also feel harsh. If the patient do not go for an early treatment can also have severe swelling and bleeding from the glands.

The following are a short note of the causes, diagnosis and treatment methods for a thyroid cancer:-

Causes:

Physicians are still not able to completely understand the exact reason of this kind of cancer. However, they say that this kind of cancer do not spread from one individual to another. Some researches have found some specific and genetic causes that lead to a thyroid cancer. The most well known factor is age that can lead to a cancer condition. The patients who are between the age of 40 and 65 years can be the sufferers. It also affects the people of a particular race. A research has found more of the African Americans are suffering with the sickness. It is also has been observed in most of the females as compared to men. A person can suffer with the sickness if any body in his/her family or his/her parents have the illness, there are ninety percent cases where the thyroid cancer is transmissible among the family members. A thyroid gland can grow cancerous cells, if someone is not having a proper intake of iodine. The people who go for an exposure in any sort of radiations can have the cancer in the thyroid glands. In the earlier days, radiation method was been used for the treatment of inflamed tonsils, neck or head problems. Thus, the numbers of thyroid cancer were elevated. The people who work in exploitive conditions like in boilers or factories of weapons or crackers or glass come in the contact of harmful rays and increase the of cancer.

Diagnosis:

The physicians usually diagnose the thyroid cancer through a physical view of the neck; usually the neck of an affected person gets significant swelling. They then try to feel the increased thyroid glands, the voice box. They also confirm if the patient has any other medical condition or any body of his/her family is suffering with the infection. Then they go for a blood test to understand the actual volume of thyroid-stimulating hormone or TSH, T3 and T4. The TSH is very important for the brain and is contrived by the pituitary gland. In some cases, it also includes a Biopsy test. In this process, the physicians remove some of the tissues and test the cancerous cells. An ultrasonography is also done to check the thyroid. In this method, some ultrasound waves are thrown on the infected glands and a computer takes pictures of the glands. In the pictures, the physicians try to find out the grown nodules and cancerous cells. If in case the thyroid affects the lungs , the physicians go for a chest X-ray.

Treatment:

A physician goes for a thyroid cancer treatment as per the condition of the cancer and the patient’s health. The treatment method may include doses of iodine and chemotherapy drugs. The chemotherapy drugs are very much popular in the treatment for any types of cancer. These drugs help to destroy the cancerous cells and immunize the body. A treatment can also include surgery. In a surgery, the physicians remove the cancerous cells and at time the thyroid. In a surgery, the physicians also try to cover the parathyroid glands with small frames of thyroid tissues so that the parathyroid glands will be secure. In a case of thyroid, the lymph nodes around the neck gets swellings, thus, in a treatment process, the doctors also remove the swollen parts of the lymph nodes. However, in a case of a surgery the affected person can also get many infections and bleeding from the parathyroid glands. At times, the parathyroid glands also face severe damages. It can also damage the components that help a person to talk or speak. The patient may also be given radioactive iodine therapy. Here, the sufferer is given radioactive iodine, which provides the thyroid glands a profound stimulation. There is also a thyroid hormone therapy that is usually given to a patient after a surgery. This therapy includes some drugs like Levothroid, Synthroid etc. These medications help to reduce the increase of TSH or thyroid-stimulating hormones and stop the cancerous cells. There is also a radiation therapy that is given on the patient though highly-energetic radioactive beams on the affected glands, without implementing any kind of surgery. A balanced diet full of vitamins, calcium and iodine is always recommended.

A research report from by the National Cancer Institute in the US, has found that every year the number of thyroid cancer is increasing in that country especially, in the women. They also say that, the disease affects mostly those women who are in the age of more than 30. Thyroid cancer is actually a thyroid neoplasm or a type of tumor of thyroid glands. A human body has thyroid glands inside the neck. The glands have two types of cells Follicular cells and the others are C cells. The Follicular cells help to generate the thyroid hormone and the C cells generate a hormone to maintain a healthy level of calcium inside the body, which is called as calcitoni. A thyroid cancer occurs when these cells start showing negative growth.

Medical vision and reports say that the thyroid glands reside inside the frontal neck part and look like a butterfly. The glands are located under the voice box or larynx and are segregated into two lobes or sections. Theses lobes are divided by an insignificant skin layer named as isthmus. If a person is having a healthy thyroid, he may not feel it by touching the neck. However, if the glands are swollen, it can be felt through touching them. The condition where the glands are swollen is medically recognized as ‘goiter’. Researchers say that the occurrence of a goiter is an indication of a smaller amount iodine intake. The thyroid glands also suffer with hyperthyroidism and/or hypothyroidism. There are a number of patients around the world who suffer with these sicknesses.

A thyroid cancer is usually related to a number of other health conditions. A cancer related to thyroid starts form the cells, and later spread to other tissues, blood vessels around the neck, throat and other appendages. In a normal process, the cells of thyroid develop and break after a fixed time. Then some more new cells are born and proceed their works. This process runs continuously and in a well-balanced manner. The developing cells are known as nodules. In a situation, when the same cells work in a incorrect approach, and may not able to grow or develop and may develop without a need or reason or in a case of an extra development, the cells may turn in to cancer cells or tumors. This condition is known as a ‘Thyroid cancer’. These nodules are divided into two sections the malignant section and Benign. The nodules named as Benign do not result cancer whereas the nodule malignant can cause serious cancer shocks. The Benign nodules cells also do not bear a nature of spreading inside the other parts of the body. Physicians say that a maximum number of thyroid nodules come under the section of benign. In a condition of Malignant, the cancerous cells start damaging the body parts and tissues. The cancer that increases its roots because of Malignant is medically known as ‘metastasis’. The other categories of thyroid cancer are Anaplastic Thyroid cancer, Medullary Thyroid cancer and Papillary thyroid cancer. In the case of Anaplastic cancer, the cancerous cells invade the follicular cells. Physicians face difficulties to observe and find these cells inside the glands. These conditions are very exceptional and challenging to treat. The other section of thyroid cancer, which is named as Medullary thyroid cancer, affects the C cells. If a patient goes for a treatment in the earlier stage, this condition is not that tough to treat. The next category is the follicular thyroid cancer and the Papillary thyroid cancer. They make a slow growth inside the glands and can be cured completely if treated on time. In many cases, the thyroid cancer also spreads outside the glands and explores the blood vessels, nerves other lymph nodes. It can also affect the other body parts like the bones and lungs. The disease can also produce tumors inside the body. Researchers from the American Thyroid Association have mentioned that the condition of Hyper or Hypothyroidism also has a great risk of thyroid cancer, if not treated well and in a case of less Calcium and minerals in the body. These conditions are also very familiar to many other infections and disabilities of thyroid glands.

Study researchers have cautioned that getting an annual dental X-ray might drastically augment risk of developing thyroid cancer.

Investigators observed that people who were given dental X-rays a minimum of 10 times had a five folds greater likelihood of developing thyroid cancer. On the basis of this study finding, scientists have raised caveat that X-rays must not be offered during check-up or when a new patient is being registered, in spite of such a practice being prevalent in several dental surgery procedures.

As the number of thyroid cancer cases has doubled in the last three decades, researchers state that the likely threats associated with dental X-ray have mostly been ignored.

Study investigator Dr. Anjum Memon stated that their research has highlighted that similar to the trunk or torso X-ray, prescription of a dental X-ray must be only in the presence of any definite clinical requirement and not to be included along with regular check-ups or during registration with dentists.

Valuable recommendation offered by dental heads is that a patient should ideally shield his/her thyroid (a gland that releases hormone at the neck base) by donning a light-weight lead collar or bib when undergoing X-ray.

The investigators queried over three hundred cancer sufferers and an analogous number of entrants in good health about the number of times they had been X-rayed. It was found that people from both genders that had dental X-ray done around 4 times were over two-folds more prone to have contracted thyroid cancer as compared to those people who had not undergone any X-ray.

The study findings have been printed in the Acta Oncologica journal and states that people who had been X-rayed 5 to 9 times has a 4 folds augmented risk.

Those belonging to the high-risk bracket were people who had 10 or more dental X-rays and the risk was 5.4 folds more as compared to a person who had not been given an X-ray in the dentist’s seat.

The investigators depended on the patient’s memory instead of dental paperwork, however stated that in spite of this, the outcomes hold significant importance.

Dr. Memon from the Brighton and Sussex Medical School explained that the study findings were backed by earlier reports of augmented chances of developing thyroid cancer among people from the dental profession (dentist, dental assistant) and X-ray technicians, indicate that being exposed to several less-dosage X-rays might be detrimental.

Dr. Memon mentioned that it was vital that that research was re-conducted with data from dental paperwork inclusive of the X-ray frequency and dosage when exposed to it.

Dr. Memon who has worked in collaboration with specialists from Kuwait and Cambridge Univ. added that in case their outcomes are corroborated then the usage of X-rays as an essential part of assessment for newly arrived patients and regular periodontal radiography conducted at annually or bi-annually especially for kids and adolescent patients would have to be re-considered and increased usage of lead collars shielding be promoted.

However dentists from Britain have stated that the research was conducted in Kuwait that has much greater prevalence of thyroid cancer cases as compared to the United Kingdom and point out that the investigators are unaware of the kind of X-ray device being deployed.

However, a spokesperson from the British Dental Health Foundation stated that there has been a significant reduction in the number of X-rays that are been taken and the doses from state-of-the-art devices are quite less.

Present recommendation by the British Dental Health Foundation is that thyroid shields are to be employed at all times for shielding from any radiation spreading. Dental X-ray holds a crucial part in identification of any form of dental condition.

Common Thyroid Cancer Symptoms That Some Patients Experience

There are generally no symptoms at all that a person will experience when this disease is in its early stages. However, when the disease has developed into its more advanced stages there are a variety of problems that a person may be able to notice. Some of the most common warning signs that are associated with this type of cancer are as follows:

Lymph nodes in the individual’s neck that feel enlarged

Difficulty in swallowing is one of the common thyroid cancer symptoms

Pain and discomfort that may be felt in either the neck or the throat area, or both

A sound of hoarseness that is heard in the individual’s voice

Problems with breathing normally

More often than not, when a nodule that has been felt in the person’s thyroid gland is checked and tested further, in as many as 99% of the cases the diagnosis of the tumor is benign. Another factor to remember is that even though you may be experiencing some of the symptoms above, it does not always mean that you have acquired this form of cancer. There is a variety of other types of health conditions that can also cause symptoms that are very similar to thyroid cancer symptoms. The only way for you to be safe and sure is to make an appointment with your family health care professional.

The specific thyroid cancer treatment options that your health care professional will suggest that you undergo will depend a great deal on the specific type of cancer it may be that you have acquired, the particular stage the cancer is in, your individual preferences, and the overall condition of your health.

Options that are Available to You

Due to the continuous advancements that have been made in the scientific and medical fields, there is a variety of different options that are available that you may select from for the care and treatment of this type of cancer. Although it is suggested to follow the recommendations of your physician, the choice in treatment is ultimately your decision. Below is a list of the most common options that individuals choose from for the treatment of thyroid cancer.

Clinical Trails

Chemotherapy

External Radiation Therapy

Radioactive Iodine

Thyroid Hormone Therapy

Surgery involving the removal of lymph nodes in the patient’s neck

Surgery that is referred to by medical professionals as a thyroidectomy, which is the removal of part or the removal of the patient’s entire thyroid.

Two Different Forms of Surgery Offered

Out of all of the options that are used for thyroid cancer treatment, the option of having surgery performed is one of the most widely used among patients that are suffering from this form of cancer. Below are the two forms of surgery that your physician may recommend.

The removal of lymph nodes in the patient’s neck This type of surgery involves removing the lymph nodes of the patient’s neck so that they can be tested for various types of cancer cells. There are times when lymph nodes that have become enlarged will also be removed.

The removal of part or all of the patient’s thyroidThis is one of the most common procedures that are recommended to patients for thyroid cancer treatment, and generally the surgeon will take out the entire thyroid. However, there are some cases where the surgeon will choose to use the ‘near-total thyroidectomy’ procedure which involves only removing small areas of tissue of the thyroid that surround the parathyroid glands. This is a procedure that can help to reduce the chances of the patient suffering from parathyroid damage.

The way that thyroid surgery is done is through a small incision that is cut at the base of the patient’s neck.

Risk Factors Involved in Using Surgery as a Thyroid Cancer Treatment

As with any type of surgery or medical procedure that is performed, the above mentioned surgery options also involve some risk factors that can occur during the procedure and after it has been performed. Below are the most common risk factors that are involved with these two forms of surgery of thyroid cancer.

The patient can acquire infections.

Bleeding can occur during the operation.

The nerves can become damaged that are connected to the patient’s vocal cords. This is a serious problem that can ultimately cause breathing to become difficult, paralysis of the vocal cords, and a voice that is either soft or hoarse.

The parathyroid glands can suffer damage that will then cause the body to have low levels of calcium.

One of the most important things to remember with this specific form of cancer is that generally when it is in its first stages of development, most individuals will not notice any type of warning signs that will let them know that they have acquired this particular disease. More often than not, an individual will not begin to notice any of the symptoms of thyroid cancer until the disease has reached an more advanced stage of its development. It is also important to keep in mind that just because you may be experiencing some of the warning signs of this type of disease, it does not mean that you in fact have acquired thyroid cancer. There is a wide variety of several different types of health problems and conditions that also have some of the very same symptoms as is experienced with this form of cancer.

Below you will find some of the most common types of symptoms of thyroid cancer that a person may experience as the disease begins to grow or spread.

Problems with breathing.

A nodule or a lump that can be felt in the neck area. Generally it will appear in the front of the individual’s neck, and it can grow at a rapid rate.

Nodules in the neck that can result in superior vena cava syndrome and it can also cause the person’s windpipe to be pushed off to one side

The person’s neck may appear to be enlarged

There are some neurologic symptoms that a person may experience if the tumors have spread to areas of the brain.

Pain or discomfort that may be experienced from the neck area, the throat, and all the way to the person’s ears

Lymph nodes of the neck that appear to be enlarged

A chronic cough that seems to be persistent and is not related to any other health condition like the common cold or allergies.

Changes of the voice that will often include problems with being able to speak normally and hoarseness.

Neck sensitivity is one of the common symptoms of thyroid cancer that may cause garments like scarves, turtlenecks, necklaces, and neckties to be very uncomfortable.

Individuals will often feel as if they are choking and they will have problems swallowing.

A sign of the disease in its aggressive stages are nodules in the neck that feel as if the whole thyroid is moving when it is manipulated.

One side of the thyroid appearing normal and the other side having a large nodule, which is also referred to as asymmetry of the thyroid.

If you begin to notice any of these symptoms of thyroid cancer, it is extremely important to make an appointment with your family health care provider. This will give him the ability to perform the tests that are needed for an adequate diagnosis, and then he will be able to discuss the procedures that may be required for a beneficial treatment plan.

A new-fangled study that lately appeared online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute points out that those individuals residing in volcanic regions might be at a heightened risk of developing thyroid cancer.

The rising occurrences of thyroid cancer have been credited to the highly sensitised screening procedures, however lately proofs suggest that this might not be the singular reason. Varied environmental features, like those linked to volcanoes, have not yet been expelled as risk factors.

In order to research this aspect, Gabriella Pellegriti, M.D., Ph.D., from the endocrinology branch, University of Catania Medical School, Garibaldi-Nesima Hospital located in Italy and associates gathered numbers of lately detected thyroid cancer cases in those residing in Sicily from January 1, 2002 till December 31, 2004 for comparing the rate of cancer occurrences in those inhabitants existing in the volcanic region of Mt. Etna of Catania in comparison to those residing in the rest of Sicily.

The researchers detected that inhabitants from the Catania province were observed to have more than 2 times increased frequency of papillary thyroid cancer, though not follicular or medullary thyroid cancers, than those residing in other parts of the island. Additionally, papillary tumors in patients from Catania had the more recurrently carrying BRAF V600 gene mutation that has been linked with a more belligerent form of thyroid cancer.

The author pointed out to the crucial aspect that a volcanic setting wherein there was production of lethal compounds that lie as hanging particulate material, gases and constituents could contaminate the water – and could raise the occurrence of thyroid cancer cases, though the means through which it had a bearing on the risk is still unclear.

The authors have penned down the crucial aspect that the conspicuous rise in papillary thyroid cancer occurrence that is linked to the Etna volcanic setting has lead them to imply that inhabitants of other volcanic regions could analogously be at a heightened risk of developing thyroid cancer, and probably, of others kinds of cancers too.

The authors further mentioned that in spite of definite risk factors for thyroid cancer in this volcanic location are still fuzzy; recognition of these factors could assist in gaining a better insight into the reasons of the rising cases of thyroid cancer in Europe and North America and possibly aid in developing deterrence methods.
