Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (or NHL or lymphoma) is a cancer starting in the lymphocytes cells (lymph nodes, lymphoid tissue like bone marrow, spleen) that are part of the body’s immune system. Lymphomas would originate in the lymphoid tissue and could then metastasize to the other body organs.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Hodgkin lymphoma (other terms – Hodgkin’s disease or Hodgkin’s lymphoma) are duo key forms of lymphomas. The cellular appearances of such duo lymphoma forms differ microscopically. However in several scenarios, specialized laboratory tests might become necessary for differentiating them.

Inception and Metastasis of non-Hodgkins lymphoma

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma or NHL is mostly segregated on the basis of microscopic appearance of cancerous cells, particular characteristics of the lymphoma cells and existence of particular chemicals on the exterior of the cells. Although there are varied NHL forms, a comprehensive outline of duo of the most prevalent forms are been provided which jointly constitute nearly half of all NHL cases.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma

A form which constitutes one among every three NHL cases. The cell structure is large-sized and cancer mostly spreads swiftly. It could afflict at any age, however, it is frequently observed to affect the elderly populace. Nearly half of all individuals that develop this lymphoma type are restored to health with therapy which is possible in case the lymphoma diagnosed is still confined to a small area of the body.

Follicular Lymphoma

Approximately, one from five lymphoma cases in the U.S. is affected with this form of lymphoma. The cells have a tendency of slowly growing in a rounded pattern within the lymph nodes. It has been commonly observed in elderly individuals and rarely affects those from the younger age band. Though benchmark therapy would not mostly be able to treat this type of cancer, yet affected individuals do tend to have a lengthy life span. Seventy percent of affected individuals with this cancer form have an average five year survival chance. With passage of time, several follicular lymphomas modify into swiftly-developing diffuse B-cell lymphoma.

Symptoms of non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

NHL might be causal to varying signs & symptoms based on what area of the body was affected. At times, this cancer could be symptomatic till it has vastly metastasized.

Non Hodgkins LymphomaLymph nodes close to the body’s surface

When the lymph nodes near the body’s surface (armpits, clavicle, groin, neck sides) are involved in cancer then these would become noticeable to the affected person, his/her kin member or the physician.

Stomach Swelling and Pain

In case a region within the stomach or belly develops cancer then it could become agonizing or show swelling because of vast fluid accruement or tumor causing lost craving for foods, stomach pains, feeling nauseous, puking or blocking fecel passage leading to pains.

Torso

In case the cancer originates in the lymph nodes, thymus in the trunk region then it could exert strain on the trachea thus causing breathing difficulty or coughing. The tumor could exert pressure on a the big vein, the superior vena cava which transports blood to the cardiac region from the upper extremities causing grave, life-menacing condition known as SVC syndrome which necessitates prompt medical attention.

Brain

When lymphomas develop in the brain they lead to headaches, muddled thought process and problems with body movements, personality alterations and at times seizure attacks.

Skin

Lymphomas which affect the skin could be observed as well as sensed alike scratchy, reddish to purplish lump
formations underneath the skin.

Generalized Symptoms:

  • Unintended weight reduction.
  • Fever.
  • Profuse night time perspiration.

Such symptoms are at times known as B symptoms and are mostly associated with swiftly developing cancerous cells.
